Polymorphism of phosphatidylglycerol-phosphatidylethanolamine model membrane systems: a 31p NMR study.

چکیده
The structural preferences of saturated and unsaturated species of phosphatidylglycerol in isolat ion and in mixed systems with unsaturated (HTT ohase) phosphatidylethanolamine have been investigated employing 31 . . . . P NMR techniques. I t is shown that equimolar (with respect to change) Ca2 + induces a " r ig id la t t i ce" (no motion) s i tuat ion in the phosphate region of the polar headgroup for a saturated species, but not for unsaturated species. Further, phosphatidylglycerol can s tab i l ize a bi layer organization in the presence of phosphatidylethanolamine which would otherwise assume the hexagonal (HII) phase, and structural bilayer-HTl transi t ions can then be triggered in these systems by the addition of Ca2 +.

The influence of divalent cations and pH on the polymorphic phase behaviour of aqueous dispersions of phosphatidylethanolamine-phosphatidylserine systems have been investigated employing 31P-NMR techniques. 2. Phosphatidylserines, derived from both egg and soya phosphatidylcholines, stabilize a bilayer organization at 30 degrees C in mixtures with soya phosphatidylethanolamine (which assumes...

(1) The effect of cytochrome c addition on the phospholipid structure of liposomes composed of cardiolipin, phosphatidylserine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine or phosphatidylethanolamine in a pure form or in mixtures was investigated by 31P-NMR and freeze-fracture techniques. (2) Cytochrome c specifically induces the hexagonal Hii phase and possibly an inverted micellar structure of...
متن کاملPolymorphic phase behaviour of lipid mixtures as detected by 31P NMR. Evidence that cholesterol may destabilize bilayer structure in membrane systems containing phosphatidylethanolamine.
1. 31p NMR is a useful analytical technique for the study of the polymorphic phase behaviour of hydrated phospholipids in excess water. Such possibilities arise due to lateral diffusion of phospholipids which, in non-bilayer phases, produce additional motional averaging mechanisms. This results in distinctive 31p NMR spectra for lipids in the bilayer phase, hexagonal (Hll) phase, or phases such...
متن کاملThe influence of poly(L-lysine) on phospholipid polymorphism. Evidence that electrostatic polypeptide-phospholipid interactions can modulate bilayer/non-bilayer transitions.
31P-NMR shows that poly(L-lysine) binding to cardiolipin, phosphatidylserine or phosphatidylglycerol does not affect the macroscopic structure or local order (in the phosphate region) of the phospholipids. In the case of cardiolipin poly(L-lysine) inhibits the ability of Ca2+ to induce the hexagonal HII phase. Alternatively, poly(L-lysine) induces the hexagonal HII phase for a fraction of the p...
متن کاملMembrane phospholipids of the ocular tunica fibrosa.
The authors compared porcine corneal and scleral membrane phospholipids determined with use of 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). These tissues make up the tunica fibrosa (outer coat) of the eye. Since the sclera, unlike the cornea, does not possess an epithelium or an endothelium, comparative analysis of these tissues included examination of the cornea with and without its epithelium and en...
